I live in Michigan, the “Great Lake State”. But, I live in an urban area, without access to water. The kayak has given me an opportunity to enjoy this water wonderland just as if I owned waterfront property. Even metro-Detroit has so many places to go. Whenever I get the urge, I load my kayak on my Jeep (see photos) and off I go. I enjoy fishing, and since I have a smaller craft, I can get to places a “normal” boat cannot. My friend, who also lives in the Detroit area, doesn’t like to fish. But she kayaks in a different fashion. She has a touring kayak, and she cruises the Detroit River!
In Florida, I have “surfed” with a kayak, riding waves. I have also fished in the ocean using a kayak. Once when I was fishing in the ocean, I hooked a huge Amberjack. Pound per pound, the Amberjack is one of the strongest fish in the ocean. It pulled me almost 7 miles before I landed it.
Some of my favorite trips have been mapped out using a book called Paddling Michigan, by Kevin and Laurie Hillstrom. I found it on Amazon.com. There have been many books published mapping trips in many locations.
All you need is a sense for adventure, a kayak, a plan, and off you go.
Enjoy life and nature. This is a wonderful world with many places to explore. Go for it.
